LETTER: Impeach or defeat Trump in 2020
There are some people with some amount of notoriety, and one who has a lot of money to spend, who are furthering the idea of impeachment.
Donald Trump has broken enough laws that the House may bring impeachment proceedings against him. Robert Mueller’s investigation will prove these assertions. While BuzzFeed’s assertion that Trump ordered Michael Cohen to lie to Congress has been refuted by a Mueller spokesperson, BuzzFeed has published another article detailing with documentary evidence that Trump was negotiating with Russia to build a Trump Tower up to least June 2016. All the while Trump has denied any business dealings with Russia.
Trump violated campaign finance laws when his attorney paid hush money to two women who had sex with him. Cohen testified that he was repaid by Trump, and also that he made these payments at the behest of Trump. Trump continues to violate the Constitution’s emoluments clause, refusing to separate himself from his real estate business, using Trump Tower in Washington and New York to collect rentals and other fees paid by foreign governments. The Chinese government has granted 40 trademarks to the Trump organization. Does anyone think this might have occurred had Trump not been president?
While some, if not most, of Trump’s lies may not be impeachable offenses, they are nonetheless examples of why he should not be president. The multitude of stupid things he has said are more examples of the same lack of intellect that defines his character. It would be a waste of time to list each lie or irrational he has made.
Tom Steyer, a wealthy hedge fund manager, has put $40 million toward the cause and intends to put up $50 million more. He has said he will support no one running for office unless they have committed to Trump’s impeachment. I admire his dedication but believe his idea is not practicable or achievable. I’m sure the House can bring impeachment proceedings, but a conviction must occur in the Senate. Good luck with the spineless majority of Republicans in that chamber.
We must allow Mueller’s team to complete its investigation. If there is much in it that would convict Trump in open court, but with still no support from the Senate for impeachment, the House should not even begin proceedings. The better idea is for the Democrats to bury any internecine rancor and support the Democratic nominee with everything they have. It would be far better for Trump to be defeated in an election. Then, he could be indicted and convicted of at least some of his crimes.
I’m an old man, but my hope is that I will live to see Trump, Ivanka, Jared and the whole Trump bunch in orange jumpsuits.
