LETTER: Vitalant’s closing is concerning

I am concerned about Vitalant’s closing of the Washington blood donation center on June 15. I was notified as I was giving blood recently – something I do frequently. As it was told to me, the former name of the company, Central Blood Bank, was welcomed to the Washington County community with open arms. It first landed on Main Street, and then moved next to How Lee on West Chestnut Street. Currently, it is housed at 95 W. Beau St.

Vitalant just received a $350,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to encourage people to donate blood. If centers were conveniently located and appropriately staffed, perhaps more people would be willing to donate. The staff members at the Washington location are caring and compassionate professionals. I understand that the lease may be up, but I would hope Vitalant would look to other Washington area sites. Blood donations are critical now because people don’t often give during the summer months.
