Transparency applies to Hough as well
The irony of Washington County Commissioner Nick Sherman’s letter to the editor on Friday cannot go unnoticed.
He called for his fellow commissioners to be transparent in the decisions they made on a new contractor for 911 equipment. Andrew Walz, the manager of North Strabane Township, filed an open records request for information on that bid. That’s great. Transparency and factual explanations are valued by the public. I agree with Sherman.
Now, when will Sherman decide he wants to be transparent on the issue of our Laura Hough, the Washington County prothonotary? An open records request was filed by the Observer-Reporter on the names Hough looked up in an unauthorized use of a background check database, but it was denied. Hough has misused taxpayer-funded equipment to look up personal information on other elected officials and private citizens, but the county would not release the names of those she searched. Why?
If Sherman truly believes in transparency in government, shouldn’t that rule apply as well to this situation? Transparency in government means transparency in all areas, not just the ones you want.
