As we have struggled through almost a decade of Donald Trump’s presence on our political stage, we have been subjected to many of his outlandish claims and those by his followers.
The latest one – which can only be classified as outrageous – is that Trump “…has been sent by God to rule the United States of America.”
Not to lead, administer or govern our country, but rule like an emperor, a king or a dictator. Not being a person of intense religious practice, I felt compelled to consult with a retired Presbyterian minister of 40-plus years of service, to research this claim within both testaments of the Holy Bible. I asked him to try to locate any incident, story, gospel or example of the Lord contracting out His earthly tasks to a blatantly corrupt person.
The minister unequivocally stated that there was no such justification to be found anywhere in the Bible.
How then is it possible that those who have praised Trump as an instrument of God have chosen to ignore his vices?
One answer is that Trump is filled with intense vanity, whereby any amount of flattery swells his head to immense proportions. In order to be viewed favorably within Trump’s orbit, a person must curry favor with him at all costs to the truth, personal integrity and self-respect.
It doesn’t seem possible that thinking people could become so easily and totally blinded by all of Trump’s corruption. Those in religious leadership walking in lock-step with Trump would rediscover much wisdom and recover their respect if they realized that praising and glorifying a corrupt person will do immense damage to the Christian teachings they profess.
