Why was money for the women’s shelter withdrawn?

As an educator of 35 years, I have seen the ramifications of homelessness, drug abuse and domestic abuse on our children. The numbers of children affected by these factors are higher now than ever and continue to grow.

With that said, I question why anyone, let alone our elected officials, would make the decision to withdraw the pre-approved $500,000 in grant money allotted to the Washington City Mission for the new women’s shelter.

The women’s shelter is a safe environment for our children and their mothers. A place that offers minimal basics such as heat, food, a shower and a place to rest.

When compared to the rest of the population, children experiencing homelessness have been shown to have higher rates of emotional, mental and behavioral issues. These types of shelters can be incredibly impactful to the well-being of our children.

When Washington County commissioners Nick Sherman and Electr Janis go back to their beautiful homes, have a hot meal, a nice warm bath and settle into their cozy beds, maybe they can think about putting aside their political antics and make the right decision. Or at least give a justifiable reason for making this incomprehensible decision. I haven’t heard one yet.
