Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi’s letter on Thursday painted a very patriotic view of the cyberattack that crippled the county.

What he doesn’t tell you is that this type of attack is a common, daily occurrence in the world. The truth is that this is a failure on the part of the commissioners and county leadership to keep up with cybersecurity.

There are thousands of tools out there to protect networks, safely store data, create reliable backups, and educate users. It’s likely these are not mastermind hackers. It’s more common that they were effective phishers and social engineers who can be thwarted with proper user training and security technology.

The commissioners need to tell us how they are going to respond with technology and training to protect the county. And, they should answer why the county was not prepared to withstand such an attack.

We don’t need the patriotic rallying cry. We need county leadership to provide the tools and training to protect the information.
