Biden needs to stand aside

President Biden’s poor debate performance has brought polarization to the Democratic Party. There are cogent arguments being made in favor of him remaining in the presidential race and others that are compelling which make the case for him to step aside: to turn the nomination over to a leader of a new generation.
Regardless of what President BIden does to shore up support now, I am of the belief that having the president at the top of the ticket will foment disaster: the return to the White House of the man who seeks to burn down the government and the country. What took place on the debate stage cannot be unseen by the millions of viewers who saw it, and it has provided fuel for devastating television ads to be placed by Donald Trump and organizations that support him.
We have also learned that the president told Democratic governors at a post-debate meeting that he wants to get more sleep and avoid events after 8 p.m. This is not what the people envision in a strong leader of the free world and there is understandable fear that the situation could become worse as the president approaches the age of 86, which is how old he would be at the end of a second term.
We know that if Trump is elected again, he would refashion our country as a place with an increasing level of hatred and divisiveness, that he will resume a war on “the other”, and that he will delight in joining the radical right-wing Supreme Court in ripping away cherished longstanding rights. A Trump presidency combined with a Republican-controlled Senate would likely enable him to appoint two more Supreme Court justices, firmly establishing for at least another generation a highly partisan and corrupt body which is not reflective of our country and its values and laws.
President Biden, you have served your country admirably for well over a half century. Please do the honorable thing to continue that level of service. Please place country above ego by stepping aside from the 2024 presidential race.
