In response to the article, “Visit draws backlash from some in the GOP,” which appeared in the June 7 edition, I was appalled to read that several members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives behaved in such a reprehensible manner during a presentation by two Capitol police officers injured while defending the Capitol building during the riots on Jan. 6, 2021.
The officers, along with many other law enforcement personnel, acted with bravery, composure and restraint under extreme circumstances. I cannot comprehend what would compel elected officials to act in such a disrespectful manner. I am happy to hear that most officials, regardless of party affiliation, behaved in the dignified manner that is expected of their high office.
To help me understand the thinking of legislators who behaved otherwise, I would ask them to send a written response to this newspaper that provides a rationale for their actions. Please also share your thoughts on how you would have responded if these same two men – and many others – made heroic attempts to stop a group such as Hamas from invading the Capitol and harming our nation’s leaders.
