In the heart of our community, Wonsettler Physical Therapy & Specialized Health is pioneering a movement towards a healthier tomorrow. By hosting a series of free, expert-led workshops, they’re turning the tide on health education, making it accessible, engaging, and, most importantly, actionable. Their next offering of workshops – which runs from March until June – highlights areas of concerns for individuals who are 50 and older. The upcoming workshops focus on pain management, menopause, balance, and strength. “We want to provide any opportunity for people to be better equipped and proactive about their health,” Cliff Wonsettler, a physical therapist and owner of Wonsettler Physical Therapy & Specialized Health, in Scenery Hill, said. “If you’re dealing with a problem, you’re going to learn how to address it.”
Empowering Through Knowledge: The Fight Against Chronic Pain
Chronic pain doesn’t have to be a life sentence. With the right knowledge and tools, breaking free is possible. Chronic pain is pain that can last months or even years. It interferes with daily life and can lead to depression and anxiety. Roughly one in four people in America suffer from chronic pain, and for individuals over 50, the number is even higher. “So many people think that it’s part of getting older and there’s some truth to that, but it doesn’t have to be the story,”Wonsettler said. “There are things you can do if you’re having persistent pain that can rewire your brain’s interpretation of that pain experience.” During the chronic pain workshop, attendees will learn how simple lifestyle changes can make an impact. “Recovery from chronic pain can’t be done through medication, and surgeries are often ineffective,” he said. “It requires a specialized knowledge and approach. Someone who really understands it.”
Menopause: A Journey of Transformation
Menopause marks a significant transition, not just a series of symptoms to be endured. Wonsettler’s workshops aim to demystify this phase, offering support, education, and empowerment. “Many people feel lost when experiencing the physical and emotional changes that occur during menopause. Many women feel they don’t have a space to talk about their experience or have support during this phase of life,” Tyra Abdalla, a physical therapist and pelvic health specialist at Wonsettler Physical Therapy & Specialized Health, said. “We want to provide a space for people to learn about their bodies and provide access for evidence-based education and tools to build resilience.” Abdalla said the workshop will also help attendees understand the impact of proper nutrition and the role food plays in balancing hormones. They’ll also learn about pelvic health, pain management, stress management, and sleep hygiene.
Balance: A Cornerstone of Independence
Imagine living without the fear of falling. Wonsettler’s balance workshop is designed to transform this into reality, teaching you how to stand strong and confident. “We want to help you think about what you can be doing right now to prevent yourself from having to deal with a fall or a broken hip as a result,” Wonsettler said. “That’s a big element of why we offer these workshops.” Struggles with balance tend to be less apparent because people avoid situations where their stability is challenged. Understanding the root of your balance problems can help you overcome your barriers, and Wonsettler said his team will provide practical exercises and techniques that attendees can do at home to improve their balance.
Strength: The Foundation of a Vibrant Life
Strength and balance are the dynamic duo of physical independence. Wonsettler’s workshops don’t just talk about the theory; they show you how to integrate strength into your daily life. “Balance and strength are so intertwined,” Wonsettler said. “If you have some strength deficits, it’s almost likely that you have an element of balance and stability issues as well.” Strength is a predictor of both healthspan and lifespan, but you don’t have to navigate building strength on your own. “We feel that we are guides for people in the areas of our focus,” Wonsettler said. “When you’re undergoing a journey like this, you need to find someone who can provide you the road map. You’re not going to get as far as you can if you don’t have that guide.”
The Wonsettler Philosophy: A Beacon of Health Education
At the core of Wonsettler Physical Therapy & Specialized Health is a belief in the transformative power of education. Their workshops are more than just classes; they’re a community coming together to learn, grow, and thrive. “The common thread among these workshops is that we not only want to help you find your way out, but also ways to be proactive. We want you to get ahead of the problem,” Wonsettler said. The workshops are held at their beautiful open floor clinic. They run anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. “This way, we really get to spend a lot of time answering people’s individual questions,” Wonsettler said.
