Cal men snap losing streak

CHEYNEY – Keith Lowe scored a game-high 23 points and made five of California University’s seven three-point field goals as the Vulcans snapped a three-game losing streak with a 64-59 victory over Cheyney Sunday afternoon in a PSAC game.

Lowe, who scored 25 points Saturday against West Chester, is the first Cal player to have consecutive 20-point games since 2010.

Tynell Fortune scored 12 points and Chris Williams contributed 10 in his first career start for Cal (1-1, 2-3).

After trailing 32-30 at halftime, Cal used a 7-0 run early in the second half to forge a 41-36 lead. The Vulcans led by as many as seven points in the second half before Cheyney (1-1, 2-2) tied the score at 59-59 after a three-point field goal with 2:05 remaining. Lowe, however, put Cal back in the lead for good with his fifth three-pointer, and Fortune sealed the victory with a pair of free throws.

Brandon Norfleet led Cheyney with 15 points.

Women’s result

California 63, Cheyney 41: Emma Mahady led a balanced California University offense with 14 points and the Vulcans remained undefeated with a 63-41 victory over host Cheyney in a PSAC game.

California, off to its best start since the 2003-04 season, improved its overall record to 5-0 and conference mark to 2-0.

Irina Kukolj scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for California. Stephanie Michael scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game, finish with 11 points. Ashley Hines led Cal on the boards with 10 rebounds. The Vulcans forced Cheyney (0-2, 0-3) into 28 turnovers.

Christina Jordan had 14 points a game-high 11 rebounds for Cheyney, but the Wolves were held to only 13 field goals.
