The Washington Wild Things have signed corner infielder Coty Pate, a rookie out of Mars Hills College, an NCAA Division II school in South Carolina.

Pate, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., batted .413 and hit 14 home runs with 52 RBI for Mars Hill last spring, when he was named second team all-conference.

“On paper, Coty looks great,” said Steve Zavacky, the Wild Things’ assistant general manager. “We were really impressed when we looked at his college stats.”

Wild Things pitcher Justin Hall also is a product of Mars Hill.

The Wild Things open the 2013 season with a six-game road trip beginning May 17. The home opener is May 24 against the Southern Illinois Miners.
