HARRISBURG (AP) – Testing shows a deer that escaped from a central Pennsylvania farm does not have chronic wasting disease despite the deadly neurological infection being confirmed in other deer at the farm.

The state Department of Agriculture says tests performed on the deer that escaped from an Adams County farm in October tested negative after being shot last month.

The doe had escaped from the deer farm where the first confirmed Pennsylvania cases of chronic wasting disease were discovered. The infection can’t be transmitted to humans, but it is fatal to elk, moose and deer.

Twenty-four farms in 12 counties remain quarantined. Tests are pending on another deer that escaped after previously being on a quarantined farm.
