Jessica Slagus had 21 points and 17 rebounds Wednesday night to lead Belle Vernon to a 69-57 victory over visiting McGuffey in a non-section matchup of unbeaten girls teams.

Belle Vernon (3-0) took control early, building a 10-point lead after one quarter. McGuffey (3-1) chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within 49-46 after three quarters, but the Leopards won the fourth quarter, 20-11. Belle Vernon had only one more field goal than McGuffey, but the Leopards were 14-for-25 at the free-throw line compared to the Highlanders’ 4-for-12.

Sammie Weiss led McGuffey with 24 points and Rachel Czeluwicz followed with 17. Abby Pattison rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11.

Avella 47, Burgettstown 34: Olivia English scored 16 points and Alexandria Barr chipped in with 10, as Avella outscored Burgettstown 17-11 in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-2.

Kristen Roy finished with 17 points for Burgettstown (0-2).

Carmichaels 57, Brownsville 24: Guard Morgan Berardi finished with a career-high 31 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals, as Carmichaels cruised to a non-section win on the night it learned it would be without senior guard Anna Cree for the rest of the season.

Center Amanda Brown contributed 12 points and Caroline Cree eight for the Mikes, who improved to 3-1.

Boys results

Carmichaels 53, Beth-Center 35: Brandon Lawless and Sean Smoggie combined for 35 points and Carmichaels remained undefeated with a 53-35 victory over visiting Beth-Center.

Lawless scored a game-high 19 points, including nine in the second quarter when the Mikes increased a 9-8 advantage after one quarter to 31-17 at halftime. Smoggie scored 16 points as Carmichaels improved its record to 4-0.

Jefferson-Morgan 58, Mapletown 51: Travis Taylor scored a team-high 22 points and made eight of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to help Jefferson-Morgan hold off host Mapletown 58-51 in a non-section game.

Taylor and Reece Henneman, who scored 19 points, helped J-M take the lead after trailing 22-21 at halftime. Taylor made 11 of 13 free throws in the game.

Dereck Riggleman scored a game-high 26 points for Mapletown (0-3).

Bentworth 57, Avella 42: Cody Levine scored a game-high 23 points in only three quarters and led Bentworth to a 57-42 victory over visiting Avella in a non-section game.

Levin scored 14 first-half points to help bentworth (2-0) forge a 29-18 lead. But Levine sat out the entire third quarter with three quarters. Meanwhile, Avella (1-3) pulled to within 36-32. But with Levine back in the game in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats pulled away. Levine scored nine points over the final eight minutes.

Chris Blackburn also had a big game for Bentworth, scoring 20 points.

Brandon Miller led Avella with 18 points.

Hundred (W.Va.) 53, West Greene 41: Hundred wused balanced scoring and the Hornets defeated visiting West Greene, 53-41.

Kirk Shriver led four Hundred players in double figures with 16 points. The Hornets are 1-3.

Bray Jackson and Dustin Shough each scored eight points for West Greene (1-1).

Westinghouse 65, Monessen 56: The Greyhounds dropped to 0-4 with a loss in the consolation game of the Franklin Regional tournament. Clintell Gillespie had 18 points, and Luke Doptis added 11 for Monessen, which outscored Westinghouse, 24-17, in the third quarter but couldn’t come all the way back.

Burgettstown 65, South Side Beaver 55: Josh Mack had 20 points and 25 rebounds, while Ryan Glover contributed 10 points and 14 rebounds and the Blue Devils (3-2) cruised. Jonathan Sabo finished with 16 points and made three 3-pointers for Burgettstown.

Jon Magusiak had 24 points for South Side Beaver.
