College basketball: Hiram tops W&J

Hiram’s basketball team overcame a six-point, first-half deficit to earn a 79-69 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Monday evening at Price Gymnasium.

The Presidents (3-7) and Terriers (3-4) were tied on 15 different occasions during the game and the lead changed hands six times.

W&J built a 26-20 lead midway through the first half, but Hiram hit a trio of three-pointers in the final 3:50, including Alan Sheppard’s with seven seconds left to give the Terriers a 38-36 edge at halftime. Hiram outscored W&J, 41-33, in the second half.

Doug Johnson had 13 points, including four three-pointers, to pace W&J. Ben Cecchini had 11 points and Zach Bellhy and Mike Resnik each scored 10. Nate Bellhy had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Sheppard led Hiram with 19 points and Steve Zivoder tossed in 14.
