PHILADELPHIA – The Eagles released two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin Tuesday in the first major roster move for a team that’s lost seven straight games.
Babin had just 5.5 sacks after recording 18 last year. He signed a five-year, $28 million deal last summer after going to his first Pro Bowl with Tennessee following the 2010 season.
The move came Tuesday, a day after a 30-22 home loss to Carolina.
Coach Andy Reid says the Eagles cut Babin to give more playing time to younger players.
Philadelphia (3-8) plays at Dallas (5-6) Sunday night.
Suh issued citation: Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was issued a traffic citation by a police officer who said he saw Suh driving fast and passing cars from the right lane of a suburban Detroit roadway.
The Lathrup Village officer gave Suh a ticket Nov. 15 for driving without due care and caution.
Police Chief William Armstrong said he’s not sure the citation will hold up. Armstrong says he watched video footage of Suh’s driving that day and thinks “the charge doesn’t fit.”
When Suh played at Nebraska he pleaded guilty to negligent driving and paid a $60 fine after crashing into three parked cars. He has been sued for $1 million by a woman who claims she was injured when Suh was in a car crash last December in Portland, Ore., and he was accused of sideswiping another driver in suburban Dearborn earlier this year.
Wilson to get larger role: The New York Giants no longer have the time to groom rookie running back David Wilson.
The first-round draft pick is going to have to start contributing as Ahmad Bradshaw’s backup in the final five games of the regular season, starting Monday against the Washington Redskins.
Wilson was thrown into the role Sunday, when Andre Brown broke his left leg in the fourth quarter of New York’s 38-10 win over the Green Bay Packers.
On most teams, the backup spot might mean a couple of carries a game.
For the Giants (7-4), though, the role is different because of Bradshaw’s foot problems. He has dealt with them for years, usually playing in pain. One bad step, and Wilson becomes the No. 1 back … in the middle of a playoff race.
“Andre played a big role in our offense, so with his absence somebody’s going to have to definitely step up on the offensive side of the ball,” Wilson said. “And, you know, the coaches told me that I’m the next guy, so I’ve been preparing and hopefully I’ll be ready when they call my number.”
Bears add Gurode: The Chicago Bears have signed former Pro Bowl offensive lineman Andre Gurode, hoping to boost a short-handed unit.
The Bears announced the signing a day after right guard Lance Louis was placed on injured reserve. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Sunday’s win over Minnesota on a blindside hit by the Vikings’ Jared Allen and will miss the rest of the season.
Left guard Chris Spencer also left the game with a knee injury.
A five-time Pro Bowl pick, Gurode made five starts at left guard and appeared in 13 games for Baltimore last season after playing with Dallas from 2002 to 2010.
Young still on outs in Detroit: Detroit receiver Titus Young remains in exile after being deactivated for last week’s game against Houston.
Young wasn’t at practice Tuesday and his status remains very much in doubt. He was benched for the Lions’ 34-31 loss to Houston on Thanksgiving for what coach Jim Schwartz described as “unacceptable” behavior during the previous weekend’s loss to Green Bay.
Schwartz said Tuesday the team will keep evaluating Young and decide “based on his behavior” when he might return.
Schwartz was asked if he thinks Young has played his last game as a Lion, but the coach says it’s way too early to tell.
Young, a second-year receiver out of Boise State, has 33 catches for 383 yards and four touchdowns this season.
