Cal volleyball advances in D-II tournament

WHEELING, W.Va. – Outside hitter Brandy Harris and junior setter Abbey Freund each had double-doubles Thursday afternoon as California University defeated Shippensburg 3-1 (26-24, 25-27, 25-18, 25-18) in the first round of the NCAA Division II women’s volleyball tournament.

California (29-7) advances to play PSAC champion Gannon today at 5 p.m. The Golden Knights advanced Thursday with a 3-1 win over Mercyhurst.

Freund directed the Cal offense with 36 assists and 18 digs for her 12th double-double of the year. Harris had 20 kills and 11 digs.
