Nettles tied for eighth after first day of PIAA golf

Peters Township senior Tommy Nettles shot a 3-over 74 Monday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York and sits three strokes back of the lead, tied for eighth placce, after the first day of the PIAA Class AAA individual championships.Nettles’ round – he went out in 36, came back in 38 – consisted of 12 pars, two birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey. He trails Chris Cerminaro of Scranton Prep and Marc Oliveri of Conestoga Valley, who both shot an even-par 71.In Class AA, Waynesburg’s Loren Dukate and Burgettstown’s Owen Miller shot matching 7-over 78s and are tied for ninth place. Yough’s Alex Patricio and Northwestern Lehigh’s Cole Miller share the lead at 1-over 72. California’s Michael Langley (85) is tied for 28th, and McGuffey’s Jesse Vensel (87) is in 32nd place.Western Regional champion Laurel Waller shot 3-over 75, and the Canon-McMillan sophomore trails Council Rock North’s Erica Herr by three strokes. Jefferson-Morgan’s Gillian Alexander shot 91 and is in 12th place in Class AA.The final round will be played today starting at 8:30 a.m., and the PIAA team tournament will take place on Wednesday.

Anthony Meneice scored two consecutive second-half goals to power Riverside to a 3-2 victory over Bentworth in a Boys Class A soccer playoffs.Austin Ridgley gave Riverside a 1-0 lead with a goal with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Chad Gurdish answered with a goal off an assist from Adam Bell. Nick McCann cut the deficit to 3-2 with a goal with 20 minutes remaining.The Bearcats ended the season with a 13-5 record. Riverside is 13-4-1.In other matches, Sewickley Academy shut out California, 8-0, in boys Class A, Franklin Regionl nipped Ringgold, 3-2, in boys Class AAA, and West Allegheny blanked Waynesburg, 8-0, in Boys Class AA.

The California University of Pennsylvania football team is ranked fourth in the initial NCAA Division II Super Region One rankings and also moved up one spot in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll, which were both released Monday.

Gino Faieta completed 12 of 21 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown for Beth-Center in a 54-6 victory over Avella Friday night. Faieta was misidentified in Saturday’s edition of the Observer-Reporter.
