YORK – Nine-over-par through three holes yesterday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, the Burgettstown High School boys golf team started to find itself. But it turned out the hole the Blue Devils’ dug was just a little too deep. Competing for the first-ever PIAA Class AA team title, Burgettstown shot a four-player score of 325 to finish in third place, four strokes shy of Wyomissing for the title. “I think our guys can kind of kick themselves a bit when they look back and say, ‘I know we could have played better,’ ” Burgettstown coach Jon Vallina said. “The first couple holes I think it was nerves. We gave up too many strokes and got way behind.” Owen Miller led the WPIAL-champion Blue Devils with a 2-over 74, a round that consisted of three birdies, three bogeys, a double and 11 pars. Drake Hoberek had the second-best score with an 84, and Cody Dobbin and Luc Bongiorni posted matching 84s. Hunter Lecker’s 98 was the score that Burgettstown was able to exclude. “I tell told the team before we left, ‘You guys are as good as any of these teams. It’s just who plays best today,” Vallina said. “I don’t think they believed me. But they found out that all they had to do is play their game, and they could have won.”
