Softball: Cal suffers first loss in PSAC split

Playing for the first time in more than two weeks, California split its PSAC West Division opener Wednesday against Mercyhurst at Lilley Field. Mercyhurst handed Cal its first loss of the season in the opener, 4-3 in eight innings, but the Vulcans rebounded to win the second game 13-3.

Cal (1-1, 15-1) received two home runs and three RBI from Lindsay Reicoff in the second game. Natalya Smarra was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, and Shelby Lia was 3-for-4 with a solo homer. Pitcher Hope Spancake improved her record to 6-0.

Cal led 2-1 in the seventh inning of the opener, getting solo homers from Alex Sagl and Breanna Morris. Mercyhurst (1-3, 9-15) forced extra innings, then took the lead in the eighth on back-to-back two-out RBI-singles.
