G.J. Senchak and Justin Taylor each threw a complete-game shutout Friday as California swept a PSAC West Division doubleheader from Clarion, 8-0 and 4-0, at Consol Energy Park.
Senchak threw a two-hitter and did not walk a batter in the opener. Taylor followed with a seven-hitter and issued only one walk as the Vulcans improved to 5-1 in the West and 18-7 overall. Clarion is 1-9, 1-19. The teams will plays their final two games of the series today in Washington.
A.J. Robinson hit a solo home run and drove in three in the opener. In the second game, Cal scored all of its runs in the sixth inning to break up a pitchers’ duel between Taylor and Clarion’s Tyler Delval, a freshman from Bentworth. Derrik Zeroski had a two-run single that gave Cal a 3-0 lead.
• Washington & Jefferson scored all of its runs during the final five innings as the Presidents pulled away for a 15-4 win over host Grove City 15-4 in a PAC game.
Tyler Schultz and Josh Staniscia each went 3-for-5 to lead the Presidents’ 17-hit attack. Schultz hit first collegiate home run and had a career-best five RBI, and Staniscia scored twice. Ronny Peirish had a run-scoring triple.
Winning pitcher Brian O’Neill matched a career high with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
• Joey Fearer came within one out of a complete game, and Alex Kozusko earned his second save in as many days as Saint Vincent defeated visiting Waynesburg 7-4 in a PAC game.
Adam Horing had a two-run homer, and Kyle Sasala tripled and scored twice, for Waynesburg (2-4, 9-9). Saint Vincent improved to 5-1, 8-7. The Bearcats are tied for second place in the conference.
