College Briefs: W&J knocks off Marietta

Ronnie Peirish hit a walk-off ground-rule double to score Scott Liller as Washington & Jefferson College bounced back from a nine-run deficit to knock off third-ranked Marietta College, 11-10, in a non-conference men’s baseball game Sunday.
The win over Marietta (15-6) was the first in 18 tries for the Presidents (14-5).
Peirish had five hits in the game, including three doubles, as W&J erased a 9-0 Marietta lead entering the bottom of the third.
Sophomore Jared Baird threw five scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory, while Josh Staniscia tripled, moving him into a four-way tie for first place in W&J history with 12 in his career.
Aaron Hopper had four hits for Marietta, while Josh Ungerbuelher homered.
McKenzie Graf, who usually plays goalie, had three goals as Washington & Jefferson won for the ninth time in its past 10 outings, defeated Penn State-Behrend, 11-3, in a non-conference women’s water polo match.
Randi Cartwright and Allison Rocha both added a pair of goals for W&J (9-15), which is ranked 10th in NCAA Division III.
Margot Wummer stopped 11 shots to earn the victory.
