Baseball: Big inning carries Canon-Mac past Peters Twp.

Justin Davey and Jared Beech had the key hits in a seven-run fifth inning Thursday night that sealed a 7-6 victory for Canon-McMillan over Peters Township in a Section 5-AAAA game.

Davey had a two-run double and Beech a two-run home run for the Big Macs (3-2, 5-6).

Chris Wastchak hit a three-run home run for the Indians (3-2, 8-3) and Matt Loether doubled twice. Brett Cello and Adam Becker each had a double.

• Logan Bowman hit a three-run homer and winning pitcher Dom Cage had a two-run double as Jefferson-Morgan moved into second place in Section 1-A with a 9-6 victory over visiting California.

J-M (3-1, 5-2) scored seven runs over the first two innings and was able to overcome walking 10 batters. After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Rockets scored three times in the bottom of the inning, two coming on Cage’s double. Bowman added his three-run homer in a four-run second that pushed J-M’s lead to 7-2.

California dropped to 3-2 in the section and 9-4 overall.

• Lincoln Key drove in three runs and Section 2-AA leader Washington received some clutch relief pitching by Guy Markley to hold off a late Burgettstown rally and defeat the visiting Blue Devils 9-7.

Wash High (7-0, 8-1) extended its winning streak to five games. The Prexies forged a 9-1 lead after five innings, but Burgettstown (2-5, 3-5) scored six times in the sixth to pull to within two runs. Kurt Kowalski got the Blue Devils’ big inning started with a solo home run.

Jonathan Spina was the winning pitcher. Markley got the final six outs for a save.

Jaylin Kelly had two doubles for Wash High, and Key also doubled. Jesse Sparra had a two-run single in the Prexies’ five-run fourth inning.

Luke Bongiorni smacked two doubles for Burgettstown. Jacob Bigler and Noah Hiles each had one double.

• Trinity scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 12-1 five-inning victory over McGuffey in a Section 3-AAA game at Consol Energy Park.

The Hillers (3-2, 5-4) scored 10 runs over the first two innings and did it by playing small-ball. The Hillers had 11 hits on the night, 10 of those being singles, including two by Ryan Moon in the big first inning. Dustin Galentine’s double was the Hillers’ only extra-base hit.

Winning pitcher Nick Riotto threw four innings, allowing one run and striking out six.

McGuffey is 0-4 in section and 1-7 overall.

• Dylan Pounds had a single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to drive across the winning run in a 6-5 victory by Chartiers-Houston over Fort Cherry in Section 2-AA.

Pounds doubled and was the winning pitcher for the Bucs (3-3). Tyler Day doubled and drove in two runs. Troy Whitfield had two RBI.

Kyle Witzberger, John Caltumo and Koltan Kobrys each had a double for the Rangers (4-2, 4-4).

• Nate Connolly doubled twice and drove in two to help Avella take a 10-3 victory from West Greene in a Section 1-A game.

Nick Kusich went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Eagles (2-2, 6-2). Tim Fraysier doubled.

C.J. Gillan had a double for West Greene (0-4, 1-7).

• Mike Blasinsky smacked three triples, scored three times and drove in five runs to send Carmichaels to a 12-2 victory over Mapletown in a five-inning Section 1-AA game.

Tommy Shoaf doubled for the Mikes (5-0, 8-1).

Kevin Ridgley and Colby Kincell each had an RBI for the Maples (0-4, 0-7).

• Winning pitcher Adam Bell hit a sacrifice fly that scored a run in the bottom of the first to drive in the winning run in Bentworth’s 2-1 victory over Beth-Center in a Section 2-AA game.

Neither team scored after the first inning. Bell won the pitching duel against Josh Miller.

Seth Hvizda had an RBI-single in the first for BC (2-5, 2-6).

Jake Rothka drove in a run with a single for Bentworth (4-3, 5-3).
