The Washington Wild Things announced Friday the signing of pitcher Will Scott.

Scott was drafted in the 32nd round by the San Diego Padres in 2010 out of Walters State Community College in Tennessee and signed a contract. He had been drafted in 2009 by Atlanta (26th round) and in 2008 by Colorado (32nd round) but chose not to sign.

A native of Marietta, Ga., Scott spent three seasons in the Padres’ system, most of it at the Class A level. He had a 5-7 record and 4.61 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 121 innings. He pitched in three games (one start) last year for Class AAA Tuscon.

“The Padres thought enough of his performance last season that they gave him a shot at Triple-A baseball, which is a sign of their confidence in his pitching ability,” Washington manager Bart Zeller said. “Will’s role will be as a starter or as a late-inning guy who will set up for our closer.”

The Wild Things will hold their annual open tryout Saturday, April 27 at Consol Energy Park.
