Softball: C-M plays powerball, routs Chartiers Valley

Section 4-AAAA leader Canon-McMillan hits three home runs and rolled to an 11-1 six-inning victory over visiting Chartiers Valley.

Maddie Engel got C-M started with a two-run homer in the first inning, and Linda Rush and Abby McCartney hit back-to-back homers in the second as the Big Macs led 6-0 after two innings.

Olivia Larusso (2-for-4) had two doubles, Yaszmin Kotar (2-for-3) tripled and Tara Fowler went 4-for-4 for C-M (10-0, 11-1). Engel (2-for-4) had three RBI.

Alayna Astuto was the winning pitcher, throwing a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

• Peters Township’s Kellyn Perich threw a one-hit shutout as the Indians blanked visiting Mt. Lebanon 6-0 in Section 4-AAAA.

Perich struck out seven and did not walk a batter. She also hit a double. Abby Cunningham doubled and drove in two runs for PT (8-3, 14-3) and Meghan Bastyr also had a double.

• Erica Burns had another big game and Carmichaels used a pair of four-run innings to remain undefeated in Section 2-A with a 12-2 six-inning victory over visiting Monessen.

Burns was the winning pitcher for the Mikes (11-0, 15-1) and helped her cause by going 2-for-4 with a double and triple. Danielle McClellan and Chelsee McCann also doubled for Carmichaels, which had 13 hits.

Monessen is 4-6, 6-7.

• Monika Joseph went 4-for-4, and Andrea Lash pitched a three-hitter, as Frazier remained one game out of first place in Section 2-A with a 7-0 victory over host West Greene.

Joseph doubled and scored two runs, and Kelsey Holp hit a two-run homer for Frazier (10-1, 11-2). Alexis Livingstone was 2-for-4 with a double for the Commodores, who host section leader Carmichaels Thursday.

West Greene falls to 5-6 in section and 8-6 overall. The Pioneers have a key section game against third-place Serra Thursday.

• Beth-Center scored four runs in the third inning, then threw out the potential game-tying run at home plate to end the game and preserve an 8-7 victory over host Waynesburg in Section 2-AA.

B-C (3-6, 3-7) led 8-6 entering the bottom of the seventh, but Waynesburg (4-6, 6-9) received a double from Alicia Spitznogle and scored one run before having a runner thrown out trying to tie the score on a passed ball.

Maddie Miller tripled and drove in two runs for B-C to back the winning pitching of Abby Gustovich. Waynesburg had 11 hits but committed nine errors.

• Cassie Weiss struck out 11 and her sister, Sammie, hit two doubles to lead the McGuffey softball team to a 10-0 victory over Washington in five innings in Section 2-AA. Marlie Mounts also had two hits for McGuffey, which improved to 9-1, 9-1.

Taylor Ellis had the lone hit for the Prexies (2-7, 2-7).

• Morgan Ellek went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles during Burgettstown’s 4-1 victory at Sewickley Academy in Section 1-A. Bry Lonick picked up the win after striking out eight. Caley Ritts was 2-for-4 with a double for Burgettstown (9-1, 10-4).

• Kayla Briggs struck out 12 and Sabrina Stankus had two hits and scored the first run of the game for the Chartiers-Houston softball team during a 3-0 home win over Bentworth in Section 2-AA yesterday. Piper McLaughlin and Casey Craig added doubles for the Bucs, who are now 9-0, 12-0.

Bentworth dropped to 6-4, 7-4.

• Jefferson-Morgan had five hits – all for extra bases – during a 15-0 win over Mapletown in a four-inning, Section 2-A game. Morgan Simkovic led the charge with a double and a triple and two RBI; Jessica Taylor belted a triple; and Christian Agnew and Morgan Gamble had doubles for Jefferson-Morgan (4-7, 7-7).

• Mikayla Fetchet had a double, a home run and six RBI to help the South Fayette softball team to a 14-0 victory over Carrick in Section 2-AAA. Ashley Iagnemma struck out eight and walked none to earn the pitching win. South Fayette improved to 3-6, 6-6.
