Canon-Mac’s Mary leads COY winners

MEADOW LANDS – Chris Mary is now 4-for-4 at the Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Coach of the Year Banquet, held Sunday at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Meadow Lands.
Mary was named Wrestling Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year after leading the Big Macs to a pair of PIAA Team Tournament titles and winning a record fourth straight WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament title. The Big Macs also had three state champions: Connor Schram, Solomon Chishko and Cody Wiercioch.
Other high school winners were Mike Bosnic of Washington, the Football Coach of the Year; Amanda Burchett of McGuffey, the Girls Basketball Coach of the Year; Michele Moeller of Canon-McMillan, the Girls Softball Coach of the Year; Phil Pergola of California, the Boys Basketball Coach of the Year; and Don Hartman of California, the Baseball Coach of the Year.
The baseball and softball awards were based on the 2012 season.
The Bill Christy Memorial Award for Excellence in Officiating was awarded to Robert Osleger and George Preisendorfer.
Becky Cook received the Meghan Canterna Memorial Award as Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.
Joe Farkas of South Fayette was this year’s selection for the Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Award.
Brownson House executive director Dan Petrola received the Roy Gillespie Memorial Special Award.
Canon-McMillan’s wrestling team received the Observer-Reporter’s Sports Headliner award.
Delany Dalfonso of Monessen was honored with the Bill Christy Sportsmanship Award.
The Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Scholarship Winners were Amanda Balzer of Chartiers-Houston, Ashley Faddis of Jefferson-Morgan, Danielle Jacobs of Waynesburg High School, Erin Ritzer of Bentworth, Johanna Schmidt of Ringgold, Michael Cecchini of Laurel Highlands, Michael Fetchet of South Fayette, Cameron Jacobs of Waynesburg, Matt Johnston of West Greene, and Tanner Sutton of Chartiers-Houston.
Receiving plaques as Olympic Sports Coach of the Year were Pat Vereb of Peters Township girls soccer, Brandt Bowman of Peters Township tennis, Teresa Booker of Washington boys track, Jon Vallina of Burgettstown golf, and Larry Fingers of Canon-McMillan boys soccer.
Special Recognition went to Morgan Berardi of Carmichaels, Kayla Briggs, Lacey Levers, Colby Miller and Garrett Vulcano of Chartiers-Houston; Brett Brumbaugh, Liana Leja and Zach Challingsworth of South Fayette, Solomon Chishko, Abby McCartney, Connor Schram and Cody Wiercioch of Canon-McMillan; Abby Cummings, Sara Komer, Veronica Latsko, Olivia Roberson and Shiloh Simonson of Peters Township; Dustin Fuller, Jaylin Kelly, Shai McKenzie and Josh Wise of Washington; Chavas Rawlins and Mariah Ward of Monessen; Nick Cichon of Ringgold; Caitlyn Dengler of Burgettstown; Dorian Johnson and Jessica Slagus of Belle Vernon; Marissa Kalsey of Waynesburg; Jessie Merckle of Fort Cherry; and Sammie Weiss of McGuffey.
