The baseball players from Hilo, Hawaii, know that the type of game they played against Paderborn, Germany in the winners’ bracket of the Pony League World Series wasn’t a typical one.

But games such as these are needed at least once in this rugged field to help a team along.

Hilo ripped 14 hits and starting pitcher Makoa Andres allowed only two hits as Hawaii routed Germany, 10-0, in a five-inning game Sunday at Lew Hays Pony Field in Washington Park.

Hilo advances to a winners’ bracket game against Chesterfield, Va., at 8 p.m. today. Paderborn will play an elimination game at 12:30 p.m.

“All along, our philosophy has been to play one game at a time,” said Hilo manager Eric Kurosawa. “We just try to win and move on.”

Hilo scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second and five in the bottom of the fourth. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit in the game and one of them, leadoff hitter and center fielder Gehrig Octavio had three. Octavio went 3-for-3, scored twice, drove in three and smashed a solo home run in the second inning.

“He’s our Mighty Mouse,” said Kurosawa. “He carried us in Maui in our state tournament. In the West Zone tournament, he didn’t hit as much, but he made some defensive plays that really helped us out.”

The heart of the batting orders – Nos. 3 through 5 – went 5-for-8 and knocked in two runs. Trayden Tamiya, the No. 8 hitter, went two for three and drove in three runs with a single to right field in the first inning and a two-run single to left field in the five-run fourth.

“We knew they must be a good team, because the beat some Southern California teams,” said Paderborn, Germany manager Georg Bull. “They are very strong. To compete with them, we have to bring our A-game. We didn’t, and that’s the reason why we lost 10-0.”

Bull thought his Paderborn players might have been overconfident for this game.

“I’m disappointed. After our good performance against Washington (an 8-1 win), I think our guys came in and thought they were going to cruise,” Bull said. “We made some key errors. We were down early and we couldn’t find our way back. I hope we learned our lesson from this.”

Bayamon advances: Jorge Matos and Kristopher Gonzalez each hit grand slams to send Bayamon, Puerto Rico, to a 17-2 victory over Bay County, Mich., in an elimination game at the Pony League World Series.

The two grand slams by Bayamon matched a record set by Port Neches, Texas in the 2002 world series.

Bayamon, the Caribbean Zone champions, moves on to play Brownsville, Texas, in another elimination game at 10 this morning. Bay County, the North Zone champion, was eliminated.

Bayamon battered Bay County pitchers for 13 hits and three home runs. Edwin Figueroa had a solo home run to lead off the fourth.

Matos went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Gonzalez was 1-for-2 with five RBI and two runs. Jose Miranda was 3-for-3 and scored three times and No. 9 hitter Alexander Vasquez went 2-for-3, scored twice and knocked in two runs.

Hunter David and Derek LaBean each had an RBI for Bay County, which allowed 33 runs in 12 innings of world series play.
