The Wild Things are enjoying the role of spoiler.

C.J. Beatty hit a three-run homer and had five RBI, and Dayne Quist pitched eight strong innings, as Washington defeated the Gateway Grizzlies, 7-1, Wednesday night at Consol Energy Park.

It was Washington’s second win in the series over Gateway and its third consecutive victory over a Frontier League playoff contender. Gateway, which has lost eight of its last 11 games, entered the night tied for the final wild-card spot.

Beatty, who was 3-for-4, hit his team-high 17th homer of the season in the fifth inning to give the Wild Things a 3-0 lead. He added a three-run double in the sixth that pushed Washington’s lead to 6-1.

A.J. Nunziato drove in Nick Boggan with a single in the eighth to close the scoring.

Shain Stoner, Nunziato and Beatty – the first three hitters in the Wild Things’ batting order – were 7-for-11 with four runs and seven RBI.

Quist (8-2) gave up six hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out three. Andy Smithmyer pitched the ninth inning. Gateway did not have a baserunner after the sixth inning.
