Cal volleyball advances in NCAA tourney

The California Vulcans advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament today after defeated Gannon 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) Thursday afternoon at the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
The third-seeded Vulcans were led by Laurel Miller, who led all players with 12 kills, as well as Molly Delaney’s nine kills. With the win, California improves to 29-8 and will now face the winner of Clarion-Seton Hill tomorrow evening. The Vulcans have now advances past the first round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last eight years,
Abbey Freund and Kristen Scurpa directed the offense with 16 and 10 assists.
The Vulcans won five of the finals seven points in the opening set, while Delaney’s four kills pushed California to victory in the second set and secured the sweep after winning the third set behind a .280 hitting percentage.
Peters Township head coach Rick Tingle is submitting an official scoring change to the PIHL after Wednesday’s Miner’s Cup win over Canon-McMillan. A goal originally credited to Jonathan Dagnal 2:45 into the third period was actually scored by Evan Opeka. The eventual game-winner was assisted by Dagnal.
Waynesburg women’s soccer player Susie Godwin added another postseason award to cap her season. The senior forward was named to the 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Women’s All-Great Lakes Region third team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Godwin, who earned All-PAC accolades for a second consecutive season, scored four goals and tallied an assist for a total of nine points during her senior season. The Buckhannon, W.Va. native was a first-team All-PAC pick in 2013.
She is the first Waynesburg women’s soccer player to be honored by the NSCAA since former standout Courtney Ebersole earned first-team honors in 2011.
Waynesburg University continues to maintain a presence in the National Wrestling Coaches Association individual rankings. A trio of Yellow Jackets is currently featured as top-10 performers in the national listings.
Seniors Luke Lohr (149) and Anthony Bonaventura (174) both received the number-four spot at their respective weights. Bonaventura boasts a team-best 10-1 overall record, while Lohr checks in with an 8-3 season mark. Junior Sam Guidi also received national attention for his work at 165 pounds. Guidi currently sports a 7-2 season record, which is good enough for him to be ranked seventh in the nation.
