W&J to celebrate 100 years of basketball

Washington & Jefferson College will celebrate 100 years of varsity men’s basketball during the weekend of Jan. 24-25. The celebration will center around the Presidents’ Jan. 25 game against Westminster at Henry Memorial Center.
The commemorative weekend kicks off Jan. 24 with an alumni game at 7 p.m. All former players and coaches are invited back to showcase their skills. Following the alumni game, a social gathering will be held at Solomon’s Seafood & Grille in Washington.
Former players and coaches are invited to attend the Presidents’ gameday practice at 10 a.m. Jan. 25 and then join the team’s pregame meal at The Commons at 11:30 a.m.
All players and coaches returning for the celebration will be recognized at halftime of Presidents’ Athletic Conference game against Westminster. A postgame reception will be held in the Allen Ballroom of the Rossin Campus Center.
“We are very excited to celebrate the great tradition of Washington & Jefferson College basketball,” head coach Glenn Gutierrez said. “Our team is excited to meet the talented players of our past and we look forward to having a great weekend of basketball on the W&J campus.
The Presidents played their first varsity basketball game Feb. 8, 1913, against Westinghouse. W&J has played 1,908 games and has a 962-946 record. W&J has won nine PAC championships, played in the NCAA Division III tournament in 1994 and ’95 and in the 1943 National Invitational Tournament at Madison Square Garden.
