W&J, Waynesburg get road wins

Washington & Jefferson had three players score at least 20 points, led by sophomore Beka Bellhy’s 26 points, and the Presidents defeated host Allegheny 90-80 in a non-conference game Thursday night in Greenville.
Valarie Dunlap scored 24 points and Chelsea Apke had 23 as the Presidents improved to 5-3.
Bellhy, Dunlap and Apke each had a double-double. Bellhy grabbed 11 rebounds, Dunlap had a game-high 14 rebounds and Apke grabbed 12. The Presidents held a commanding 55-33 edge on the boards and made 32 of 41 free throws.
A former Fort Cherry High School standout, Bellhy scored 18 of her 26 points in the first half, when W&J forged a 41-35 lead at intermission. The Presidents pushed the advantage to double digits early in the second half before Allegheny (7-4) closed to within two points with more than 15 minutes remaining.
The Presidents then took control of the game by building a 19-point advantage with 5:43 to play. Allegheny never got within single digits the rest of the way.
Allegheny had five players score in double figures, led by Kendall Hoffman with 17 points.
Waynesburg 77, LaRoche 75: Freshman Courtney Sargent came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points and Lauren Blair led a second-half charge as Waynesburg upset host La Roche, 77-75, in a non-conference game.
After the teams played to a 37-37 standoff in the first half, La Roche (9-2) forged a 53-44 lead with 13 minutes remaining. Waynesburg (3-5), however, went on a 19-6 run, taking a 60-59 lead after two free throws by Sargent with 5:55 left. Blair, who scored all of her 15 points after intermission, added a three-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets a four-point edge.
Waynesburg stretched its lead to 68-61 after two free throws by Blair, but La Roche rallied and tied the score at 69-69 with 1:30 remaining. Blair then gave Waynesburg the lead for good by making a three-pointer with 44 seconds to play.
La Roche had a chance to win at the buzzer but Shataya White missed a three-pointer. La Roche’s only other loss was to NAIA member Point Park.
Elaine Hasek scored 14 points for Waynesburg. Blair had five assists and five steals.
Mackenzie O’Donnell paced La Roche with 18 points.
