The Washington Wild Things have signed former NCAA Division III Pitcher of the Year Matt Purnell out of Eastern Connecticut State.

A right-handed reliever, Purnell (6-2, 200) pitched in 29 games last season, compiling a 6-1 record, nine saves and 1.63 ERA. He struck out 51 batters and walking only five in 38 2/3 innings.

“We are excited about the addition of Matt to our pitching staff. He demonstrated that he has command of the strike zone. … He exemplifies what our pitching philosophy is, which is throw strikes and put the ball in play,” Washington manager Bart Zeller said. “He was a closer at Eastern Connecticut and we will give him a shot to earn a spot at the back of our bullpen. He comes to us highly recommended to us by his college coach and scouts in the area.”
