Cal women avenge loss to Millersville

Chelsea McKnight tied her career high with 17 points as California University’s women’s basketball team avenged an earlier loss by defeating host Millersville 63-53 in a PSAC game Saturday afternoon.
Millersville defeated California on the Vulcans’ home court 91-76 in the season opener.
Cal’s defense was much better this time as it held Millersville to 35 percent shooting.
McKnight came off the bench to make five of seven shots from the field and six of seven from the free-throw line.
Kaitlynn Fratz scored 13 points and Miki Glenn added 10 for Cal (5-5), which has reached the .500 mark after opening the season with four consecutive losses.
Millersville (6-4) received a team-high 13 points from Yasmin Cooper.
Cal scored the first seven points of the game en route to a 36-23 lead at halftime. Millersville managed to draw to within 57-51 with 3:26 to play, but McKnight answered with a key three-pointer.
Baldwin-Wallace 74, Waynesburg 62: Waynesburg fell behind visiting Baldwin-Wallace by 18 points in the first half, then rallied in the second half and pulled to within two points before B-W came away with a 74-62 non-conference victory.
Waynesburg (3-6) suffered through a cold-shooting first half and trailed 27-9 with four minutes left before halftime. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the second half, using a 12-4 to cut B-W’s lead to 50-48 with nine minutes left. The run included three-pointers by Elaine Hasek, Lauren Blair and Hayden Giuliani. Baldwin-Wallace (8-2), however, answered Waynesburg’s spurt with a 10-0 run and was able to protect the lead down the stretch, making 19 of 28 free throws in the second half.
Audrey Smolik led B-W with 18 points. Lexi Rohrbach had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Guiliani scored a team-high 16 points for Waynesburg. Rebecca Kerr had 11 points and Blair 10.
Courtney Sargent grabbed 12 rebounds and Hasek had 10.
Men’s results
Millersville 78, California 66: California junior forward Arman Marks scored a career-high 24 points but hot-shooting Millersville defeated visiting California 78-66 in a PSAC game, snapping the Vulcans’ three-game winning streak.
Millersville (3-6) made 13 three-pointers and 17 of 18 free throws to overcome the 24-point, seven-rebound performance by Marks.
The loss drops Cal to 4-7.
The Marauders made eight three-point field goals in the first half en route to a 38-26 lead at intermission. Millersville had a 13-0 run over a six-minute stretch that opened a 20-10 lead.
Millersville opened the second half with another 13-0 run to forge its largest lead at 51-26. Cal, behind Marks and guard Tynell Fortune, rallied and pulled to within 10 points with 5:27 remaining.
A three-pointer by Marks cut Millersville’s lead to 69-63 with 2:04 left, but the Marauders went 7-for-7 at thre free-throw line down the stretch.
Alonzo Murphy scored 17 points for California.
Jalen Lester led four Millersville players in double figures with 15 points.
Duquesne 95, Massachusetts-Lowell 77: Ovie Soko scored 22 points and Duquesne shot 62.3 percent from the field to rout host Massachusetts-Lowell 95-77.
Duquesne (5-5) scored the game’s first 11 points, led 19-3 less than six minutes into the game and was up by as many as 25 points in the second half.
Soko finished 9 of 14 from the field, and Tra’Vaughn White added 15 points and Micah Mason had 14. Duquesne was 33 of 53 from the field, 13 of 24 from beyond the arc and 16 of 19 on free throws.
DJ Mlachnik had 14 points for Massachusetts-Lowell (1-11), which has now lost six games this season by 15 points or more.
