Yellow Jackets’ run comes up short

Waynesburg put together a 10-4 run in the game’s closing minutes, but Jacob Fleener’s 12-foot jumper rattled off the rim at the buzzer as Muskingum held on for an 80-79 win over the visiting Yellow Jackets Saturday in a men’s nonconference college basketball game.

Waynesburg trailed 42-38 at the half and fell behind 76-69 with 2:38 remaining in the game before closing the gap down the stretch.

Dave Brown had a game-high 26 points to lead Muskingum (4-4), while Logan Kimble had 16 points and nine rebounds.

B.J. Durham had 21 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (5-6), who made just 18 of 31 free throws in the game.

Jason Probst added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Waynesburg.

Women’s basketball

Washington & Jefferson 71, Anderson (Ind.) 44: Chelsea Apke had 15 points and 11 rebounds as Washington & Jefferson outscored Anderson (Ind.) 35-12 in the second half en route to a 71-44 victory in the first round of the Lehman College Coaches vs. Cancer Women’s Basketball Classic Saturday.

W&J, which will play host Lehman in today’s final, led just 36-32 at the half before opening the final 20 minutes of play with a 12-0 run.

Alexa DelGreco added 13 points for the Presidents (6-3), while Fort Cherry High School graduate Beka Bellhy had 10.

Jenna Wittenberg led Anderson (0-9) with 20 points, making half of her team’s 16 field goals in the game.
