Cal softball off to 4-0 start

California University ran its record to 4-0 by winning a pair of games Saturday in Pembroke, N.C. The Vulcans defeated Concord, 11-3, in five innings and blanked Fayetteville State, 9-0, also in five innings.

Against Concord, Cal scored all its runs in the first three innings. Winning pitcher Lindsay Reicoff doubled and drove in three runs, and Stephani Ellis, Breanna Morris and Erica Vallecorsa each had two RBI.

Starter Hope Spancake and reliever Haley Bashada combined on a three-hit shutout of Fayetteville State. Spancake struck out six in four innings.

Natalya Smarra was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI to lead the Vulcans’ offense.
