Perfect weekend for Cal softball

The California University women’s softball team won its fifth consecutive game to start the season Sunday at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational in North Carolina. The Vulcans scored in each fo the first three innings and defeated the host team 4-3.

Winning pitcher Alex Sagl pitched three-hit ball over six innings.

In the top of the first, the Braves started the game with a leadoff homer before Cal tied the score with a sacrifice. The Vulcans took a 2-1 lead in the second when Breanna Morris doubled and scored on a fielding error. In the bottom of the third, the Vulcans added to the lead with a solo home run by freshman Lindsay Reicoff.

Cal added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single by freshman Natalya Smarra. The run came in handy as UNC-Pembroke scored two runs on a two-out single in the seventh inning.
