The Canon-McMillan School District has retired the football jersey No. 86 that was worn by former C-M and West Virginia University standout Jeff Macerelli. The jersey is being displayed in a case on the wall in the athletic wing at Canon-McMillan High School.

Macerelli died unexpectedly in 2006 at age 48.

While at Canon-McMillan, Macerelli was a three-year starter for the football team and was a member of the 1974 Western Pennsylvania Football Coaches All-Star Team. He was selected to the Big 33 Football Classic.

At West Virginia, Macerelli was a four-year letterman as a linebacker, and during his freshman year played on the Mountaineers’ team that won the Peach Bowl. He was named All-American in 1976 as a sophomore, and the ECAC Division I Defensive Player of the Year in 1977. Macerelli was a co-captain for WVU as a senior in 1978. He left WVU as the school’s all-time leading tackler, and still ranks fifth on the Moutaineers’ all-time list with 432 stops.

Macerelli was named to WVU’s 100 Year Team.

He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in sociology and a masters in mining safety management.

In 2009, Macerelli was named to the C-M Hall of Honor.
