Steelers’ Adams stabbed in robbery attempt
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams was stabbed in the abdomen during what Pittsburgh police are calling a robbery attmept in front of his home on Pittsburgh’s South Side at 3 a.m. Saturday.
Police report that the 23-year-old Adams said three men approached him in an attempted carjacking. One man reportedly waived a gun in the face of Adams, who said he did not have his keys with him. As the situation escalated, one of the other men stabbed Adams twice in the abdomen and the left forearm before all three fled the scene.
Adams had surgery on Saturday at UPMC-Mercy hospital and posted a photo on Twitter in his hospital bed while giving the thumbs up sign. He is expected to be ready to return to the field at the start of training camp at the end of July.
“I had an angel lookin out for me! Ill be ok just gotta fight to get back harder then ever,” Adams tweeted.
Adams was named the Steelers’ Joe Greene Great Performance Award winner – given to the team’s rookie of the year – following the 2012 season.
A second-round draft pick out of Ohio State, Adams started six games at right tackle and appeared in 10.
He is expected to be the team’s starting right tackle in 2013.
“We are aware of the situation regarding Mike Adams being stabbed earlier this morning,” Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said. “We are in direct communication with both Mike and his family. Mike is expected to make a full recovery.”
