Defending 450 Class champion Ryan Dungey secured his first overall win of the season last weekend at the Tennessee National in the third event of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, ending Ryan Villopoto’s previous five-moto winning streak. Now only 10 points separate Dungey and Villopoto as the series heads to Mt. Morris for Saturday afternoon’s 37th Annual GEICO High Point National at High Point Raceway.
In the highly-competitive 250 Class, Round 4 could potentially see a fourth different winner.
Kawasaki’s Villopoto, the 2011 450 Class champion, made his return to motocross last month after missing last season because of a knee injury. Villopoto’s return has been nearly flawless with wins in five of the first six motos. Though Villopoto has been the fastest rider on the track this season, Dungey, Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, James Stewart and the rest of the field are capable of challenging the points leader.
Red Bull KTM’s Dungey finished the day strong at Tennesse with a win in Moto 2. Coupled with his 2012 High Point National victory, Dungey holds much momentum heading into Saturday’s race. However, the defending champion has had his hands full with 450 Class rookie Justin Barcia. Now a full-time contender in the premier class, the Team Honda rider has proven capable of running the pace of the fastest motocross racers in the country and sits third overall in the championship standings.
Close behind Barcia in the points is Suzuki’s James Stewart in fourth place. Stewart has maintained a consistent string of finishes, but the 2008 champion has yet to win a moto this season. Trey Canard experienced bad luck last round when he went 29-3 for ninth place overall. Canard is fifth overall heading into High Point.
The highly competitive 250 Class has had three different winners, but it’s Ken Roczen who tops the points standings. Roczen has four of the six moto wins, and Eli Tomac has the other two. Each rider has an overall win. While Marvin Musquin hasn’t won a moto, the French rider was able to secure the overall win last round with a consistent 2-2 moto scores.
Defending 250 Class champion Blake Baggett finished with a pair of thirds last round, putting him within striking distance of the third place. Baggett continues to recover from a preseason wrist injury that has kept him just outside of the lead contention.
The GEICO High Point Nationals begin at 1 p.m with live coverage of the opening motos on FUEL TV and Allisports.com. In addition to live coverage on Allisports.com, the second motos can be seen the same day on NBC Sports Network at 5 p.m.
