When second-seeded Bishop Canevin upset top seed Seton-La Salle, 56-47, Friday evening in the WPIAL Class AA girls basketball championship game at the A.J. Palumbo Center, it extended the season for McGuffey.

Bishop Canevin’s victory gives McGuffey (20-3) a seventh-place finish and the WPIAL’s final Class AA girls berth in the PIAA playoffs that begin next weekend. McGuffey will play the District 10 champion, either North East (21-3) or General McLane (23-2), in the first round of the state tournament Friday night at a site to be determined.

The South Fayette boys also qualified for the state playoffs in Class AAA. The Lions, the sixth-place team, will play WPIAL champion Montour in the first round.
