California women fall to Gannon

ERIE – Nettis Blake had 20 points and eight rebounds as eighth-ranked Gannon whipped California University, 77-50, in a PSAC women’s basketball quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday night at the Hammermill Center.
The loss drops the Vulcans, who entered the tournament ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, to 20-8 and leaves them waiting to see if they will get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Gannon, the region’s top-rated team, also got 11 points and 10 rebounds from Jen Papich, 11 assists from Kelley Sundberg, 13 points from Brittany Batts and 11 points from Doriyon Glass as they outscored the Vulcans 44-25 in the second half to steadily pull away.
Gannon (27-3) shot 57 percent in the game, getting 46 points in the paint, including 23 second-chance points, as the Knights had a 26-15 rebounding edge, including 15-5 at the offensive end.
Emma Mahady led California, which shot just 39 percent, with 14 points.
Gannon advances to the PSAC semifinals where it will face Millersville, which upset fourth-seeded Shippensburg, 62-42, Tuesday night. Bloomsburg will face Edinboro in the other semifinal.
