WARRENDALE – The Canon-McMillan hockey team pushed No. 3 seed North Allegheny to overtime in the PIHL Penguins Cup Class AAA quarterfinals, but Cody Black scored the game-winner five minutes into the first extra session to give the Tigers a 2-1 win Wednesday at Bladerunners-Warrendale.

The decisive play started with a three-on-three rush and ended with Black scoring on a hard wrister to the top right of the net.

North Allegheny (16-4-2) advances to the quarterfinals and will play second-seeded Bethel Park next week at RMU’s Island Sports Center.

The game was anything but routine, featuring two penalty shots – neither producing a goal – and 14 penalties.

Shawn Baird gave North Allegheny a 1-0 lead when he scored on a wrist shot from the top of the left point at 14 minutes, 47 seconds of the opening period, converting on the first power play of the game.

Canon-McMillan’s Austin Tonkovich tied the score by backhanding a rebound past Bradford Thornburgh at 6:45 of the second.

The goal was the 15th of the season for Tonkovich.

Goaltender Ryan Christian made 26 saves for Canon-McMillan (12-7-4), including stopping Marty Huber’s wrister on a penalty shot in the third period.

But Canon-McMillan couldn’t convert on a pair of five-on-three opportunities in the third, the first to open the period, the second about halfway through.

James Oddi earned the second penalty shot of the game, though Thornburgh used his right pad to stop Oddi.

Canon-McMillan, which outshot North Allegheny, 38-28, advanced to this point by topping Butler, 3-0, in the first round on Monday night, getting goals from Tonkovich, Oddi and Colman Slain.

North Allegheny, meanwhile, was one of four teams to earn a first-round bye.
