College baseball/softball: Cal sweeps

Men’s baseball Kyle Petty homered in the first game and tripled in the second as California University swept a non-conference doubleheader from Clarion, 10-0, and 3-1. Petty had three hits and drove in two runs in the opener to back six shutout innings from Kyle Thomas. Carmichaels High School graduate Chuck Gasti added two hits for the Vulcans (6-2). Mike Fennell picked up the win in the nightcap, outdueling Bentworth graduate Tyler Delval, who scatterd six hits in six innings for Clarion (0-4). Petty, who added two more hits, picked up the save, while California High School graduate Ben Carson had a hit and scored a run for the Vulcans.

Women’s softball Washington & Jefferson opened its season with a split of games at the Salisbury Sea Gull Classic, beating Scranton, 10-1, in the opener before losing to Salisbury, 9-0, in women’s softball action. W&J (1-1) drew 14 walks in the opener, while Madison Rotto had an RBI double and three-run homer in the five-inning victory. Stephanie Zur and Sadie Marak had two hits each in the nightcap. Kathryn Larson earned the win for Salisbury, while Rotto took the loss.
