Three Washington & Jefferson College pitchers combined on a one-hitter and the Presidents completed their season-opening three-game sweep of Bethany by defeating the Bison 5-1 Sunday at Ross Memorial Park.

Starter Randall Risch and relievers Mike Vizzini (1-0) and Kyle McLain struck out nine Bethany hitters and were backed by Kyle Smith’s two-run inside-the-park homer in the eighth inning that capped the scoring. Vizzini threw four hitless innings, walking one and striking out six.

W&J had only four hits and scored its first two runs without the benefit of a hit. The Presidents broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third inning when a two-base error allowed D.J. Michalski, who had walked and stolen second base, to score.

Bethany’s only hit was a two-out single up the middle in the fourth inning.
