Senior Kyle Thomas and freshman Mick Fennell pitched complete games to lead California University a PSAC West Division doubleheader sweep of Merychurst, 5-1 and 3-1, Sunday in Erie.

Cal (3-1, 16-4) won three of the four games against the Lakers in the conference-opening series. It was Cal’s the first series win over Mercyhurst since 2009.

Thomas threw a five-hitter in the opener and was supported by the Vulcans’ four-run first inning, which was capped by a three-run homer by Matt Peters.

Fennell improved his record to 3-1 with his third-straight victory. He tossed a five-hitter and threw only 83 pitches in the complete-game performance. Fennell lowered his ERA to 0.76.

Cal scored three times in the fifth inning of the nightcap to take a 3-1 lead. The Vulcans scored on an RBI-single by A.J. Robinson, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by David Marcus.
