Senior second baseman Stephanie Zur’s game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning of the opener helped Washington & Jefferson split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader against Bethany Saturday at Brooks Park.

W&J won the opener 6-5, but former Chartiers-Houston standout Kiersten Conwell threw a three-hit shutout for Bethany in the nightcap as the Bison won 7-0.

W&J (1-1, 11-6) trailed 5-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener. The Presidents scored twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh to force extra innings. Emily Watson’s two-out, two-run single tied the score at 5-5.

In the eighth, Zur’s two-out opposite-field single scored Chalese Watson with the game-winning run in the eighth.

Conwell, who was tagged with the loss in relief in the opener, then dominated the Presidents in the second game, striking out four and walking only two. She recorded 10 outs on ground balls.

Maria Vallone homered and drove in three runs to lead the offense for Bethany (1-1, 8-8).
