Baseball: Luko, Luketich help California upset Carmichaels

Josh Luko and Mike Luketich had three hits apiece to help the California baseball team to an 8-7 win over visiting Carmichaels Monday in a continuation of a suspended game, spoiling the Mikes’ bid for a perfect run through Section 1-A.
With the win, California improves to 8-2, 14-4, while Carmichaels drops to 9-1, 12-3. The Mikes had already clinched the section title.
One of Luko’s hits was a double, and Luketich added three RBI. Brian Fisher was the winning pitcher for California after striking out five and walking two. Aaron Previsky contributed two hits.
Colton Henry and Mike Blasinsky doubled for Carmichaels. Brandon Lawless suffered his first of the year, dropping his record to 6-1.
• Mike Smith went the distance while striking out 10 and added two hits and an RBI at the plate during the Burgettstown baseball team’s 7-5 win over Washington in Section 2-AA. Drake Hoberek had three hits and three RBI for Burgettstown, which improved to 5-9, 6-9.
Jonathan Spina took the loss for the Prexies (10-4, 11-5) but did add a triple. Jaylin Kelly had two hits for Washington.
The loss means Wash High shares the Section 2-AA title with Brownsville, a 3-1 winner at Charleroi yesterday.
• Matt Heslin collected three hits, and Kyle Witzberger went the distance on the mound during Fort Cherry’s 5-4 win over visiting Chartiers-Houston Monday in Section 2-AA.
John Findling had a two-out, two-run single during the Rangers’ (7-7, 7-10) four-run fifth. Witzberger walked three and struck out seven, while Blake Green doubled.
Dylan Pounds had a triple and Kyle Johnston doubled for the Bucs (9-5, 11-7), who had already clinched a playoff spot. Pounds took the loss but did strike out seven.
• Peters Township scored three unearned runs in the first inning to take a 4-2 win from Trinity in a non-section game.
Jake Kirschler struck out four, did not walk a batter and gave up four hits for the Indians (12-6).
Dustin Galentine and Zach Cain each had a double for the Hillers (9-8).
• Adam Bell homered and had three RBI, Jake Rothka struck out six, and Bentworth punched its ticket to the playoffs with a 6-2 win at Beth-Center. Trevor Wood added a triple for Bentworth, which is 9-5, 10-5 and tied with Chartiers-Houston for third place in Section 2-AA.
Lane Zekir took the loss for Beth-Center (6-8, 6-9).
• Mapletown scored two runs on a West Greene error with one out in the top of the seventh en route to a 2-1 win for the Maples in Section 1-A. Patrick Clites was the winning pitcher for Mapletown (1-9, 3-12) after walking none and striking out five.
Tanner Wildman took the loss for West Greene (1-9, 3-13), despite posting seven strikeouts. Zach Bedilion added a triple.
• Winning pitcher Tyler Bowman went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Jefferson-Morgan to a 7-4 victory over Frazier in a non-section game.
Jordan Dicks went 1-for-2 with three runs for the Rockets (10-4). Bowman struck out seven and allowed three hits.
Frazier fell to 7-9.
• Brandon Furlong went 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI to help Brownsville to a 3-1 victory over Charleroi in a Section 2-AA game.
Tyler Spohn tossed a four-hitter for the Falcons (10-4, 13-4).
Chad Wagner drove in a run for the Cougars (0-14, 1-18) in the bottom of the seventh.
