Local briefs: California men lose at PSAC tournament

California was limited to four hits as defending NCAA champion West Chester defeated the Vulcans, 5-0, in the opening round of the PSAC men’s baseball tournament Wednesday at Johnstown.
California (33-17) will play an elimination game this morning against Mercyhurst.
West Chester (23-23-1) raced out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first against Jack Dennis. Chris Pula had an RBI single and later homered for West Chester.
Five Washington & Jefferson College players and four from Waynesburg University were named to the All-PAC softball teams Wednesday.
W&J senior second baseman Stephanie Zur and junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham, a Peters Township graduate, were named first-team selections, as was Waynesburg junior outfielder Jasmine Blackwell.
W&J also had a pair of second-team selections in sophomore third baseman Sadie Marak and freshman utility player Emily Watson. Freshman Krista McCartney earned honorable-mention recognition.
Senior shortstop Rachael Moon earned second-team honors for Waynesburg, as did junior pitcher Carrie Maier. Junior Madison Presto was named honorable mention.
Kyle Steele went the distance to earn the victory as Pliska’s Auto Body topped Chambers Insurance, 6-2, in a Washington Pony game.
Adam Raggi tripled, Dale Miller doubled and Connor Bedillion added a pair of hits for Pliska’s.
Lane Zook doubled, while Mac Chambers took the loss for Chambers Insurance.
Michigan visits Duke and North Carolina travels to Michigan State in this year’s Big Ten-ACC Challenge.
The conferences announced the matchups Wednesday for the 12-game schedule to be played Dec. 3-4. Fourteen of the teams played in the NCAA tournament last season.
This marks the first Challenge for the three new ACC schools – Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame. Pitt plays host to Penn State, Syracuse is home against Indiana and Notre Dame visits Iowa.
N.C. State plays host to Northwestern and new coach Chris Collins, a former Duke assistant. And Maryland visits Ohio State in its final Challenge as an ACC school before joining the Big Ten.
Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are the three schools from the 15-team ACC that are left out.
