JOLIET, Ill. – Gary Lee pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener, and Will Scott and Matt Phillips combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in the second game, as the Wild Things swept a doubleheader Wednesday night from the Joliet Slammers, 3-0 and 6-4, at Silver Cross Field.
The game marked the return to Joliet of Wild Things manager Bart Zeller. He was manager of the Slammers for the last two seasons and guided Joliet to the Frontier League championship in 2011.
Washington has won seven of its last eight games and is tied for first place in the Frontier League’s East Division with a 7-4 record.
The Wild Things took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning of the opener on a sacrifice fly by Jovan Rosa, and Shain Stoner followed with a solo homer. Darian Sandford added a solo homer in the seventh.
Lee (2-0), who did not walk a batter, allowed only two singles, both by Grant DeBruin, in the fourth and seventh innings.
In the nightcap, Washington forged a 3-1 lead before scoring three more runs in the sixth. A.J. Nunziato hit a solo home run for the Wild Things. Andrew Heck had a two-run single in the sixth.
Scott (1-0) was the winning pitcher in relief of Shawn Smith.
