JOLIET, Ill. – Shain Stoner hit a home run and Shawn Sanford allowed one earned over six innings as the Wild Things defeated the Joliet Slammers 5-3 Thursday night in a rain-shortened Frontier League game.

The game was called in the seventh inning after a rain delay of one hour and 20 minutes.

Washington swept the three-game series and has won eight of its last nine games.

The Wild Things took the lead for good at 5-3 with two runs in the fifth inning, when newcomer Nick Akins drove in Stoner with a single and Maxx Garrett drew a bases-loaded walk. Akins was signed when pitcher Justin Hall was placed on the seven-day disabled list.

Sanford (2-0) allowed seven hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out five.

Washington begins a weekend series tonight at Windy City.
