SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Xavier Humphrey scored a game-high 25 points Sunday to lead Charleston (W.Va.) to a 65-55 victory over cold-shooting California in a men’s basketball game played at Shepherd College’s Butcher Center.

California, which opened its season Saturday with a loss to Shepherd, is off to an 0-2 start.

The Vulcans made only seven field goals during the first half as they fell behind 34-19 at intermission.

Neither shot the ball well, but Charleston forced 18 California turnovers and Humphrey made five three-pointers for the Golden Eagles (2-0). Cal Charleston trailed only in the game’s first two minutes and led by as many as 17 points early in the second half.

Jake Jacubec paced California with 16 points, all coming in the second half. Alonzo Murphy scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Tynell Fortune scored 11 points.

Denio Chirindja scored 11 points for Charleston, making nine of 10 free-throw attempts. The Golden eagles were 18-for-22 at the line.

Charleston’s Baptiste Bouchard had 10 points.

Charleston opened its season Saturday with a five-point win over Slippery Rock.
